New restaurant group meets standards bureau on training
The new group and the standards bureau are exploring cooperation on training and the practical use of standards.

A newly formed body for caterers and restaurants in Guyana, known as CARA, sat down with the national standards bureau, GNBS, to explore collaboration on standards and industry practices. They met on 28 October 2026, a Wednesday, at the GNBS headquarters in Sophia, Georgetown.
Kaieteur News reported on 30 October 2026 that the two groups met to look at ways to work together. They named training, industry sensitisation and the practical use of standards. Sensitisation means helping businesses learn about the standards that apply to them.
iNews Guyana reported on 29 October 2026 that the groups also talked about information sessions. The sessions would explain current standards in plain, practical terms. This would help food service businesses understand and use them.
Guyana Times reported that a restaurant code of practice was drafted for update in 2024. It said a GNBS officer tied the update to the oil and gas industry and to more people coming to Guyana.
Guyana Times also reported that the code does not cover institutional food services, such as school feeding programmes. The paper said roadside food caravans are left out too. The paper said over 90 restaurants were operating in the country at the time.
GNBS has also been building its ability to help local firms. The Department of Public Information said the National Quality Infrastructure (NQI) project was finished. iNews Guyana reported that the Inter-American Development Bank supported the project. It said the project made the bureau better able to help local businesses meet recognised international standards.
Kaieteur News also reported that this year GNBS is working with GCCI, the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry and other bodies on National Small Business Week.
