CJIAC pushes ahead with runway, terminal and baggage upgrades
The work covers runways, terminal space, boarding bridges and security, as more international travellers use the airport.

CJIAC is moving ahead with a wide set of infrastructure upgrades. The Department of Public Information listed the work in a statement published on 20 October 2026.
The upgrades are meant to serve a growing number of international passengers. They include repairs to the runways and taxiways, and more room in the terminal. They also cover modern boarding bridges, automated baggage systems and better security on the airfield.
Kaieteur News reported in September 2026 that two contracts, awarded through NPTAB, will rebuild the main CJIA runway and Taxiway Charlie. According to the paper, the airport corporation said the runway was last rehabilitated in 2005. It said Taxiway Charlie has had no major rebuild for over 35 years.
Baggage handling will change too. The Department of Public Information said in a statement published on 9 June 2026 that the airport will get a new inline baggage handling system with extra scanners and cameras. Off-site check-in services are also planned.
Kaieteur News reported that this year's budget gave the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation $140 billion. Of that sum, the newspaper said, $3.656 billion was set aside for the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Corporation.
Terminal 2 is a 150,000 sq ft building. UK-based BHM Construction and the Manchester Airport Group are to design and build it. It is due by 2028.
