CJIA management says it is moving ahead with upgrades to the airport's runways, terminal, baggage systems and airfield.

News Source Guyana and Demerara Waves reported the plans on 20 October 2026. They include repair work on the runways and taxiways. They also include more room in the terminal.

Management also listed modern boarding bridges and automated baggage systems. Airfield upgrades are planned too, with better security facilities.

Kaieteur News reported that the runway and Taxiway Charlie repair contracts were awarded in September 2026 through NPTAB. Two local contractors won them. Together the contracts are worth $3.329 billion. R&N Construction Services won Lot 2, the main runway work, with a contract of $1.210 billion.

Kaieteur News also reported that the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation asked for bids on the runway and Taxiway Charlie work in June 2026. The work is paid for from the $140B budget given to the ministry.

Kaieteur News reported that the Ministry of Public Works said its 2025 agenda for CJIA included a second terminal and a new border control system. The agenda also listed more scanners and CCTV systems, plus repair of the runway and taxiways. Runway and taxiway work appears in both the 2025 agenda and the current list.
