The Government is reviewing it. It would be the first Stabroek project built mostly around gas. A Kaieteur News report published on 18 October 2026 said start-up is proposed for 2030.

The Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago said in its Energy Now publication that the seven earlier projects focused on oil. Longtail is built around non-associated gas. That is gas found on its own, not pumped up as a by-product of oil.

Kaieteur News reported that the Government's mid-year report says ExxonMobil Guyana Limited submitted a Field Development Plan in March. The report says the plan is being vetted together with the company's application for a production licence. According to the report, Exxon expects approval so that it can start operations by 2030.

The Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago reported in Energy Now that Guyana's 2026 budget set aside GY$118.9 million, about US$570,000, for a technical review of Longtail. According to Energy Now, the Government plans to hire an international consultancy to assess the plan after it is formally submitted. Energy Now said that check would come before a production licence is issued.

Kaieteur News reported that Exxon's project summary covers the Longtail, Tripletail and Turbot gas fields. According to Kaieteur News, planned output is 1,000 to 1,500 MMscfd of gas, which means million standard cubic feet per day. Kaieteur News said the plan also targets condensate output of 200 to 290 thousand barrels a day. Kaieteur News reported that this would make it Exxon's largest offshore development in Guyana so far.

Offshore Engineer reported that Exxon Guyana's president said Longtail gas could feed a possible pipeline to the Berbice region. Offshore Engineer reported that a second gas development is also planned in the southeast of the Stabroek Block.

Offshore Engineer said the pipeline's approval depends on the Government building enough long-term industrial demand for the gas.
