Guyana Power and Light (GPL) and the Ministry of Public Utilities are looking at more sources of electricity. President Irfaan Ali said demand for power is rising fast.

News Source Guyana reported the President's comments on 26 October 2026.

Guyana Times reported on 27 October 2026 that Ali announced plans in September. He said GPL would see significant investment across three parts of its systems: generation, transmission and distribution. Generation means making electricity. Transmission means carrying it over long distances. Distribution means delivering it to customers.

Guyana Times also reported figures that the President cited in September. According to those figures, GPL's highest recorded demand was 257 megawatts. The President's figures put its installed generation capacity at 265.6 MW, the paper said. A megawatt is a unit of electrical power. Peak demand is the highest use recorded. Installed capacity is what the power plants are built to supply.
