EPA says power plant was exempt from an EIA
Kaieteur News reported that the agency says one study covered both the NGL and the power plant, answering a claim that the law was broken.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says the power plant did not need its own Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). An EIA is a study of how a project may affect the environment. The agency says one environmental study covered both the NGL and the power plant.
Kaieteur News reported on 17 October 2026 that the EPA made the statement that week. INews Guyana made the same point in a report published on 14 October 2026.
Kaieteur News reported that the statement answered former EPA head Dr Vincent Adams. In a report published on 11 October 2026, the paper said Adams claimed the government broke environmental law. He said it went ahead with the Wales project without an EIA.
Stabroek News reported that the EPA exempted the 300 MW Wales gas power plant from a separate EIA in a public notice on 6 January 2023. The paper said a plant of that size would usually need an EIA, and that the decision drew criticism.
The EPA has also exempted other projects from an EIA, including the proposed Arcade project. One example is the Gold Hill Sand Project by CEALT Logistics Inc. The agency said that project will not have a big effect on the environment. The EPA also said its decision did not mean the project was approved.
The notice also said people the project could affect can appeal the decision. They have 30 days from the day the notice was published.
