Construction has begun on Canal City, a development on the East Coast Demerara. The site is at La Bonne Intention, known as LBI. President Irfaan Ali said building has already begun.

Guyana Times reported on 24 October 2026 that Ali made the announcement. An EIN Presswire release published on 23 October 2026 carried the same news.

EIN Presswire, carrying a release from the Department of Public Information, said Canal City will be built around the existing irrigation and drainage canal at LBI. The release said the canal is meant to be a waterfront for business, recreation and housing.

The King's Foundation, a UK charity, describes Canal City as a planned sustainable demonstration town at LBI. It is one of seven demonstration projects. The Government of Guyana and the foundation are running these projects together as a partnership.

The King's Foundation said the partnership grew out of the Georgetown Urban Framework Plan, which is its main vehicle. The plan is tied to Guyana's Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030. It covers drainage and flood resilience, transport, urban expansion and protecting heritage.

Guyana Times reported that the Government of Guyana announced the partnership in 2024. It was announced alongside Qatar Foundation's Earthna Center. The King's Foundation is giving urban-planning support. That support includes an urban development framework, a smart building code, pilot neighbourhood plans and a greenway strategy.

iNews Guyana reported on another project at LBI. A four-lane access road is being built there. It is part of the LBI Estate Road Project, Lot 32. The project is worth $1.3 billion, and work on it started in February 2026. The contractor on the job is R&B Investment Incorporated.

The story was first reported by Guyana Times.
